Life Drawing with Jonathan Brier: Studying anatomy with a life model.
Jonathan Brier’s workshop will look at the human body and how to capture it on paper, learning how to use a variety of mediums to draw the human figure. Perspective, proportion, shading and tone will be brought together to help you break down the anatomy of the model. You’ll come away with a collection of partial and whole figure sketches.
£10 per workshop.
Workshops include a 1 hour break. Please bring packed lunches.
MOSTYN’S Portffolio programme is an Arts Council Wales funded initiative for young people with a passion for the visual arts. Aimed at students in Conwy aged between 14 and 18, the programme sets out to nurture and support more able and talented students. Experienced artists from a range of disciplines will share their work and help you develop your skills in exploring materials and techniques you may not have used before. There will be opportunities for you to discuss your work and develop your personal portfolio. My Workshops Focus on the fundamentals of Realistic Oil Painting Techniques which include both traditional underpaintings and more contemporary direct painting methods.
During a typical single day intensive workshop, I will lecture, demonstrate painting techniques and provide one-on-one instruction as students paint from life.
The classes will focus on numerous Painting Techniques and how they vary at different stages of the painting process. I aim to cover everything from composition and colour mixing of skin tones to more advanced techniques such as colour temperature and Glazing which creates the visual illusion of the depth.
Beginners to advanced students are welcome as I will work one on one with each student to help them achieve their next level in painting and give students specific guidance to meet their individual artistic goals.
Currently, most of my workshops have been taking place at either Oriel Mostyn or at the Royal Cambrian Academy Conwy. It's well worth joining their mailing list or asking to be kept informed about future events as they can book up fast and often before I get to announce them.
These include:
Tutored Life Drawing Classes
Oil Painting for Beginners Workshops
Introduction to Portrait Painting and Skin Tone Workshops
Still Life Oil Painting Workshops
Workshops typically include the following depending on specific relevance.
Required Materials
Composition
Lighting
Underpainting & Grisaille

Colour Theory
Colour mixing
Skin Tones

My Workshops are not about students leaving with polished pieces or painted by numbers Artwork instead I aim to give them the tools and knowledge to enable them to leave the class with confidence and the ability to continue on their own.
There's more to MOSTYN than its reputation as the foremost contemporary gallery and visual arts centre in Wales. Behind an impressive Edwardian terracotta facade, and topped with a landmark gold spire, in the traditional seaside town of Llandudno, the original turn of the century galleries are merged with stunning modern spaces in an award-winning architectural design. The six gallery spaces exhibit the best in international contemporary art and craft, showing artists and makers from Wales and beyond. With friendly staff, activities for all ages, a lovely shop and a bright and airy café, there's something for everyone.
Our vision is to activate people’s lives through visual arts, and inspire them to form and share new perspectives.
Exhibition Programme
In its six galleries, cafê and meeting room MOSTYN shows exciting exhibitions which showcase the best contemporary art in Wales and from around the world. Engagement, Learning and Inclusion
MOSTYN produces a very wide and highly imaginative programme of learning and engagement activities aimed at school, college, university, youth and special needs groups as well as individuals and lifelong members.
Royal Cambrian Academicians (Members) are practising painters, sculptors, printmakers and architects, who after a selection process are elected by their peers to become a member. The current President of the Academy is Jeremy Yates, there can be up to 150 Academicians at any one time.
Constituted in 1881 by Queen Victoria the Royal Cambrian Academy is a centre for artistic excellence in Wales, it aims to exhibit work by members of the Academy, to promote up and coming artists of quality, to mount historical exhibitions and offer a lively venue for education.
In the late 19th century, North Wales was home to the first artists' colony in Britain. It emerged from the summer sojourns of David Cox to Betws-y-Coed between 1844 and 1856. By 1881 the Conwy Valley was at the peak of its fame as a home and resort for large numbers of professional and amateur artists. The prospect of viewing painters at work attracted a great many visitors, as a consequence the seaside town of Llandudno emerged as a centre for the sale of many such pictures.
The seven men who launched the Academy were all devotees of the artists' colony, most of them originally from the north west of England from where Betws-y-Coed had become easily accessible by train.
